2018 Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition Winner for Jazz
The Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition is a prestigious competition for 18 to 22 year old US musicians. The categories of classical, contemporary and jazz music are combined to choose one overall winner for each instrument. It is so rigorous that they may decide no one is worthy to receive any prize.
I was the only jazz pianist to receive an award this year, Honorable Mention, losing the first prize to a classical pianist graduate student at The Juilliard School who is a perennial competition winner. As the only jazz pianist singled out for achievement, it means that I am the winner for jazz.
This was my first time competing at Yamaha. I am an undergraduate student at the Berklee College of Music.
