To Whom It May Concern,
It is my pleasure to be able to comment to you on pianist Max Holm. I had the opportunity to get to know Max in my role as Director of the Jazz Band of America (JBOA), and more recently, as his director in the award-winning Crescent Super Band. The Jazz Band of America, organized by Music for All as part of their National Festival, brings together the best young jazz talent from around the country. As expected, the musicians were truly top notch, especially in their improvisational abilities, but Max, especially stood out. My all-star ensembles in Utah have garnered 27 DownBeat Awards in the last 7 years, but I have never encountered a high school pianist with Max’s level of musical achievement, maturity, or focus.
Max is highly self-motivated. While playing in the JBOA, he consistently pushed himself and those around him to significantly raise the bar on their performance. He is a man on a mission and stays focused on that. He has participated in more camps, masterclasses, and workshops than almost anyone I know. If he can’t afford it, he organizes gigs and fundraisers until he can.
He maintains a robust presence with his webpage and has a well-documented list of achievements already.
Max has worked with several top-tier jazz artists over the last few years and has impressed them with his improvisational skills and ability. This list includes such well-known names as Wynton Marsalis, Shelly Berg, Matt Wilson, Gerald Clayton, Robin Eubanks, and Kirk Whalum. He also has logged scores of performances in front of thousands that give him a unique edge over the majority of his peers. In fact, this year he will be performing on major tours in Cuba and Washington DC with the Crescent Super Band and GRAMMY-winner, Jeff Coffin of the Dave Matthews Band.
Max is without question one of the finest musicians and soloists I have encountered in my career. While he is indeed a fine musician, he also possesses more rare qualities like a passion for music, a sense of humor, integrity, and drive that will guarantee his success in his future ventures. I can say with all surety that there is not a single program in the country that would not greatly benefit from his contributions.
To conclude, I would like to restate my very highest recommendation for Max. If you have any further questions regarding his ability or this recommendation, please do not hesitate to contact me at the number or email address above.
